Chest made from timbers salvaged from the Rousseau (WSP VES00001). Inscription inside lid: "Made from the original timbers of the Bark Rousseau. Built in 1801 in Philadelphia for Stephen Girard and sailed in the China trade. Bought by George Howland, Jr., in 1834, and fitted for the whale fishery. Broken up in 1893. l.l. 7.6.94 l.r. A.G.G."
Built by Nicholas Vandusen for banker and merchant Stephen Girard. Trade with China. Began as a merchant vessel for Girard, then became a whaling vessel when sold to George Howland (Goerge Howland & Sons) in 1831.
